Recognition and Awards
Last year as in previous years Cois Tine undertook a lot of work that made a difference to many people. Usually this just happened with little notoriety.  In 2011 it was a bit different as Cois Tine was featured in RTE's the Secret Millionaire Programme and received a very welcome prize of €5,000. However, this was not the only award that Cois Tine received in recent times.   It also received recognition as runner up in the national Diverse Ireland Awards and two Certificates of Recognition, one from AKIDWA a Dublin based African Women's Organisation and the second from the Sudanese Association of Cork. These were given for Cois Tine's "support" and for "dedication to promoting equality and Justice for migrant women in Ireland."

Court limits right of EU states to send asylum seekers to state of first entry
22 Dec 2011:  An Irish Times Article by  CAROL COULTER, Legal Affairs Editor reports that an asylum seeker may not be sent back to the first EU member state he landed in from outside the EU if he risks being subjected to inhuman treatment there, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled.   Read more.

 

Ireland must fill serious gaps in human rights record.
6 Oct. 2011:  An Article in the Journal.ie reports that the government will be examined on its human rights record by the UN today, as campaigners call on ministers to address “serious gaps” in the protection of vulnerable groups.  Read more

 

A Toast!!

For centuries glasses were raised to toast the health of friend's and for practical reasons — to assure them that the wine they were about to drink wasn't poisoned. To spike the wine with poison had become an all too common means of dealing with social problems — disposing of an enemy, silencing the competition, preventing a messy divorce, and the like.

This was not the case at the joint NASC/COIS TINE wine tasting fundraising event which took place recently in Cois Tine's premises at St. Mary's Popes Quay. Here the toasts of the evening were a sign of close cooperative relationship that exists between the two agencies, which both benefits our immigrant client group and, in these difficult times, avoids wasteful duplication.
