Why must Christians marry in Church?

Behind this question is a further one: what does marriage in Church add to traditional marriage?  The answer is Christ.  Marriage in Church is a sacrament.  This means that Christ promises to be with the husband and wife all during their married lives to help them grow in love of each other and bring up their children well.  No longer will they be on their own as they try to love and understand each other and their children.  Christ will always be with them.

The Church is very optimistic about Christian marriage.  Ephesians 5:23-32 tells us that Christian marriage is meant to be a sign and model showing us how we are to love each other and giving us a fair image of what God’s love is like.  Have you ever seen a marriage where the husband’s and wife’s love for each other and for their children spoke to you of God’s love for you and of how you yourself should love other people?...I have.
